Mandy Patinkin Cast as Odin in Prime Video's 'God of War' Series

Veteran actor Mandy Patinkin has been cast as Odin in Prime Video's live-action adaptation of the "God of War" video game franchise. The announcement was made on January 29, 2026, by Amazon MGM Studios, following an exclusive report by Deadline.

The series, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, has received a two-season order. Pre-production is underway in Vancouver, with casting ongoing.

Patinkin joins a growing cast that includes Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Teresa Palmer as Sif.

Odin Role Description

Odin, known as the All-Father, is described as the most powerful Aesir god and a patriarch who leads with an iron fist. Despite not being physically imposing or overtly god-like, he is an unrivaled seeker of knowledge whose appearance can be deceptive.

The character is paranoid, manipulative, and dangerous, especially when pursuing prophecies. He will take extreme measures to prevent Ragnarök, the Norse end of days, positioning him as a formidable antagonist to Kratos.

Series Overview

The "God of War" series adapts the PlayStation games developed by Santa Monica Studio, focusing on the Norse mythology era introduced in the 2018 title and continued in "God of War Ragnarök." It follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos' late wife and Atreus' mother.

The story explores Kratos teaching Atreus to become a better god, while Atreus helps his father become a better human.

Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye ("Shōgun," "The Boys," "Fallout") will direct the first two episodes.

Production Team

Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Co-executive producers are Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis.

The project aligns with the trend of adapting successful video game properties for television, following Prime Video's work on other game-based series.

Cast Additions and Context

Patinkin's casting adds to recent announcements for the series. Ryan Hurst, known for "Sons of Anarchy," was previously cast as Kratos. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson ("Severance") plays Thor, Max Parker plays Heimdall, and Teresa Palmer portrays Sif, Thor's wife and goddess of family.

Significance of the Casting

Patinkin brings extensive experience to the role. He is a Tony Award winner and has starred in "Homeland" as Saul Berenson, "The Princess Bride" as Inigo Montoya, and other projects including "Criminal Minds" and recent appearances in "Brilliant Minds" and "The Artist." His casting highlights the series' aim to attract acclaimed performers for key mythological figures.

The announcement follows closely on heels of other cast reveals, indicating momentum in pre-production. No premiere date has been set.
